When I was growing up we went out to eat a lot. At least it seems like a lot now that I have a family and we never go out to eat. When we would go, my parents would instruct us on our order. A special treat though was on report card day. Whenever we got a report card, we would go out to eat and we could order whatever we wanted. But the most special eating-out-day of all was on your 13th birthday. On your 13th birthday, not only could you order whatever you wanted, but you got to choose the restaurant.
My dad decided to continue this tradition with his grandkids and this week was Scooter Man’s turn. He could go to any restaurant in Nashville he wanted. Any restaurant. His choice? Steak N Shake. Lara and I both sat down with him at different times offering up nicer suggestions, but in the end, the boy wanted a bacon cheeseburger, french fries, and a milkshake. This is his idea of a good time, so to Stake N Shake the eight of us went. Because this was significantly cheaper than other 13th birthday celebrations, my father gave Scooter Man a gift of extra cash. In hindsight, he may have chosen the better option than any of us did. Happy 13th birthday, Son!
