When my children were first learning to swim, we’d play a game. I bet you know it. In this game, my children would stand at the edge of the pool. Wading in the water, I would reach my hands out and say “jump!” After much coaxing and hand-holding, they would finally jump into the water, safely held in my hands and arms.

My kids are now fine, strong swimmers. (Well, we’re still working with the six-year old). But I had to get in the water first.

This is the most important quality for a worship leader. It sounds obvious, but for me at least, it’s easy to lose sight of this foundation. Worship leader, first be a worshiper. Worship off the platform, in the secret place. Worship as your lifestyle. I’ve heard it said that you can’t lead people to where you haven’t already been. However deep you desire to take your congregation, you must have already been deeper.

Over to you: What are other characteristics of good worship leading? If you lead worship, how do you keep first things first?
