One of my favorite things about last night’s Grammy Awards wasn’t a performance and it wasn’t an award. It was watching Taylor Swift in the audience. Who wasn’t charmed by her sheer enthusiasm for … others? She cheered for legendary icons as well as her favorite bands whose platforms are still being built. I got the impression she was rooting for younger acts (as defined by how long they’ve been in the public eye) even when she lost to them. She was goofy, she was a fan, and I love her for it.

Here are the lessons I take away.

  1. Guard your heart; don’t get jaded
  2. Don’t take yourself too seriously
  3. Be a fan. Champion your peers. And sometimes, even your competition
