If you walk onto a set, you have to talk the talk.
– from Movie Speak: How to Talk Like You Belong on a Film Set by Tony Bill
Movie Speak: How to Talk Like You Belong on a Film Set. I love this little book and I’ve read it cover to cover twice. If you’ve ever read the end credits after your favorite movie and wondered “what on earth is a gaffer or best boy?”, this book has your answer and then some. Film producer and movie industry veteran Tony Bill (The Sting) shares his knowledge of production jargon with good humor, entertaining illustrations, and a dash of history. The book makes for fine bedtime reading because it holds my interest but at the same time it’s easy to put down. It’s essentially a vocabulary list.
The book works best however, as a reference. That’s why I chose the Kindle version. That way I always have it at the ready when I’m on set and hear an unfamiliar term.
Over to you: What are you reading?
